Neo-Renaissance Period Stone Fireplace, Dated 1534

About the Item

This outstanding Tonnerre stone fireplace is a masterpiece of the first French Renaissance. It was sculpted in 1534, under the reign of King François the 1st for Philippe Merlan (1503-1546), Baron of Montpont, Lord of Jully-lez-Arnay-le-Duc. This monumental fireplace was sitting in one of the main rooms on the second floor of his castle of Arnay-le-Duc in Bourgogne. On the center of the hood base, on the lintel, is written the motto of the Merlan family "IL N'EST QU'ADRESSE - DE GRAND BIEN MÉRITE" (“There is only ability – of great merit”). It presents a very rich carved decoration of two large oblong bas-reliefs showing riders participating in a lion hunt. The allegories of Hunting and War are flanked on the sides, very richly decorated with motifs of winged cherubs and leafy vases, lined with friezes of oves, all punctuated by pilasters with capitals and very fine arabesque decorations.
