These 3 inch tiles depicting various patterns and coloured glazes of flowers, fleur de lys and heart designs in red, black, and white With beautiful lustre glazes and array of patterns, these tiles are brilliant pieces of British pottery for a collector of historical ceramics. Pilkington’s Tiles & Pottery Co. Pilkington’s was established in Clifton Junction, Manchester in 1891 by four members of the Pilkington family. Employing Josiah Wedgwood’s former chemist, William Burton, as company manager, the pottery collaborated with leading British designers including Lewis Foreman Day, Walter Crane and C. F. A. Voysey. At the beginning of the 20th century, Pilkington’s were one of the leading makers of high-quality tiles and pottery in Britain, rivalling well-known names of the ceramics world such as Maw & Co, Doulton and Minton. Such was Pilkington’s reputation that they were awarded a Royal Warrant in 1913 by George V, trading under the name Pilkington’s Lancastrian Pottery Company. Examples of Pilkington’s tiles can be found in The British Museum and London’s V&A.

Set of 4 English Arts & Crafts Glazed Floral Tiles
By Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company, Lewis Foreman Day
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
Four 6-inch English arts and crafts era glazed floral tiles, circa 1900, attributed to Lewis Foreman Day for Pilkington’s Tile and Pottery Co. It is well-known that while not all Pilkington's tile were signed, initial designs were marked with a single letter 'P' to the reverse. From around 1900 onwards, this was later adapted to be a pair of letter 'P's, impressed on opposite sides of the tile with a 5 bar back. 19th century architect and decorative designer, Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), was artistic consultant for Pilkington’s as one of the leading designers of the arts and crafts movement. Several of his pottery works can be found in The British Museum and the V&A, including this tile of a similar design made for Pilkington’s at Clifton Junction dating to around 1900. Each decorated with a stylised red glazed flower among green leaves and vines on a rich dark blue backdrop, these four tiles together create a 62 cm square (24.5 inch) decorative panel, making a beautiful floral artwork piece for the walls of an interior. Alternatively, these antique English tiles...
