About the Item

This is an old tsukubai (stone basin) believed to have been made in Japan. In Japanese culture, there is a long-standing tradition of designing gardens that reflect the changing beauty of the four seasons. Among the elements that express the spirit of tranquility and hospitality in these gardens, the tsukubai plays a particularly important role. Traditionally, it was placed at the entrance of a teahouse, allowing guests to wash their hands and rinse their mouths before entering. Water would flow from a bamboo spout (kakei) and be collected in this stone basin. This piece features a rare design shaped like a traditional folding fan (ōgi). In Japan, the fan shape is considered auspicious, symbolizing prosperity and expansion, and has long been cherished as a motif in interior and decorative arts. Measuring approximately W 40.5 cm × D 30.5 cm × H 12.4 cm and weighing around 16.25 kg, it is compact and easy to handle. Its size makes it versatile for placement at the entrance of a home, in a garden corner, or as a display piece in a retail or gallery setting, adding a subtle yet elegant accent to any space. Overall, the item is in good condition. There is one repaired crack and another small repaired area (please refer to the images marked with red circles for details). Neither is particularly noticeable, blending well with the natural surface of the stone, and they do not interfere with the aesthetic or functional qualities of the piece. While many tsukubai are made of stone, fan-shaped examples like this are relatively rare, making this a highly unique and collectible item. Its calm and refined presence blends beautifully not only with traditional Japanese interiors but also with modern spaces. A highly recommended piece. Item number: SC122 Dimensions: W 40.5 cm × D 30.5 cm × H 12.4 cm Weight: 16.25 kg [We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin. Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations. Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated. Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.]
