Stone Buddha of the Edo Period in Japan/1700-1850/Jizo Bodhisattva

About the Item

Introducing a beautiful and refined Jizo Bosatsu stone statue, crafted during the mid-Edo period (around 1700–1850). This stone statue represents Jizo Bosatsu, a Buddhist bodhisattva known for his compassion and dedication to protecting people from suffering and disaster, especially children and travelers. Often depicted as a monk with a shaved head, Jizo is shown in a gentle prayer posture, with his hands pressed together at his chest. The statue has an elongated, vertical shape with a simple yet elegant design. Its quiet and understated presence embodies a refined beauty, distinct from lavish or ostentatious pieces. The serene smile on Jizo's face exudes warmth, guiding viewers into a state of peace and calm. The carving on the stone, though aged, remains well-preserved. The flowing lines of the robes, the fingers delicately joining in prayer, and the graceful expression on the face are beautifully detailed, reflecting the care and craftsmanship that went into its creation. Over the years, part of the base (near the feet) has been lost, but it is stable and can stand on its own, so you can display it with confidence. With its moderate size (20.5 cm wide, 16.3 cm deep, 42 cm tall), this statue can harmonize with any space, whether placed in an entryway, on a veranda, or in a living room. When placed in a garden, it will gain character alongside the changing seasons, blending beautifully with moss, flowers, and greenery. For instance, placing it in a corner of the garden or amidst a small stone arrangement will enhance the Japanese aesthetic and provide a peaceful accent to the landscape. This stone Buddha gently harmonizes with both Japanese and Western interiors, whether indoors or outdoors, and is a masterpiece that adds calm and warmth to your life.
