19th Century French Empire Antique Jardinière Plant Stand

About the Item

An incredibly striking stand from the first Empire, this fine object boasts magnificent golden veneers match booked and employed to create bursts of flame throughout all surfaces. The entire surface remains in very fine condition with only minor veneer losses (see condition notes), the rim lined in an attractive repeating-teardrop motif gilt bronze border, the lip projecting slightly over the carcass. This is constructed with a series of laminated blocks built up from the inside beneath the veneers with four added blocks to elevate the later Dirk Van Erp hand-hammered and dovetailed copper vessel. These rest over three klismo legs, each with curled returns mounted with finely detailed rosettes and a long curving acanthus mount flowing down the knee over robust lion paws. The stand rests over a tri-form base, expertly veneered to almost simulate the furl of a candle flame around a circular gilt bronze rim and raised central plateau. The base is constructed with three-over-two interlocking knuckles at the centermost joint. Retaining a fine faded cognac surface with it's original mounts throughout, this is an absolutely stunning display of craftsmanship and clarity of design from the Empire period. Airy and modern in it's distinct Neoclassical form, this is a piece you will cherish in your home for a lifetime. Measurements: 20 5/8" diameter x 34" H Condition report: Age cracks and minor losses to veneers throughout, mostly isolated to edges of base and edges of rim, along with some veneer patching here and there throughout. Mounts are original and untouched. Interior of jardinière painted to counteract pest damage, blocks added to fit the later copper vessel. Gilt bronzes with oxidization. Overall very fine condition.
