Bretby Planter, Majolica Jardiniere, Green Art Nouveau Style c.1890

About the Item

A green glazed majolica jardinière/planter, handcrafted in England towards the end of the 19th century by the renowned potters Bretby. This decorative set comprises a ceramic planter and a matching ceramic pedestal. The planter features a dramatic design of splayed and gathered ruffles, with a rotund body adorned by flowing, curved lines that encircle its surface. In contrast, the pedestal exhibits a romantic Art Nouveau aesthetic, decorated with natural motifs and undulating spirals. Both pieces finished in a vibrant chartreuse green glaze, which showcases a delicate craquelure and a subtle, iridescent sheen under light. When assembled, the jardinière—including the planter atop the pedestal—stands 83 cm tall with a diameter of 33 cm. There is some age-related wear to both pieces: the planter has minor chips along the ruffled edge and base, and the pedestal displays a few small chips. These imperfections could be professionally restored, though they also contribute to the richness and depth of this exquisite example of Victorian majolica
