About the Item

Clement MASSIER (1857-1945) Majolica flower vase/column vase, France Very decorative and of high quality. Marked: Clement Massier Unique running glaze. A guaranteed eye-catcher. ABOUT THE ARTIST Clement Massier was born in France in 1845. Born into a family of ceramicists, Clément Massier became interested in the artistic business from an early age. After years of work, study and travel, he moved his share of the family business to Golfe-Juan in 1884 and began producing ceramics with a Hispano-Moresque influence, using silver and copper oxide glazes shimmering in a smoke kiln. Following the arrival of Lucien Levy-Dhurmer in 1887, Massier introduced fiery luster glazes enriched with etching and painting, applying them to forms ranging from hand-crafted individuality to slip-cast uniformity. He soon commanded a bustling factory and showroom with an elite international clientele. Clement, Jerome; Delphin were three brothers from a family of potters in Vallauris, southern France. All three worked in the family business of Jerome Massier et Cie (Jerome was their father's name) in Vallauris, but later worked independently. Clement, the middle brother, born in 1845, was the most prominent of the three. He worked in Vallauris before moving to nearby Golfe-Juan, and is known for his luster glazes, which were later taken up by the American firm of Weller. He was a leading Art Nouveau figures, opening a salon in Paris at the turn of the century. (Jerome, born 1850, and Delphin, born 1836, continued to work in Vallauris. Of these two, Jerome's work is the most sought after.)
