About the Item

An exceptional Continental 19th century Grand Tour Period patinated Bronze, Black Belgian, and Verde Antico marble statue of Perseus and Medusa. This exquisitely detailed statue of Perseus having vanquished Medusa is based on a model by sculptor Benvenuto Cellini in 1552, which currently resides at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. The statue is raised by a black Belgian marble and Verde Antico square plinth below an elaborately designed pedestal displaying busts, rams heads, and niches on all sides. Showcased inside of each niche is a different figure from the story of Perseus and Medusa including his mother Danae, Hermes, Athena and Andromeda. The patinated bronze statue showcases Perseus standing on the decapitated corpse of Medusa, holding her head aloft with an outstretched arm, and holding his sword in the other hand. Perseus wears a sash across his chest engraved with the original sculptor's name in Latin, and the date of the original "Perseus" by Benvenuto Cellini was sculpted. Wonderful and original warm patina throughout. Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571) was an Italian goldsmith, sculptor, and writer, best known for his bronze masterpiece Perseus with the Head of Medusa and the Saliera created for King Francis I of France. His autobiography, The Life of Benvenuto Cellini, vividly captures his adventurous life and artistic achievements, cementing his legacy as a key figure of the Renaissance. An exceptional Continental 19th century Grand Tour Period patinated Bronze statue of Perseus and Medusa.
