Japanese antique stone pagoda tip/Edo period/Temple item/Garden decoration

About the Item

This is the upper tier of a pagoda that is said to have once stood within the grounds of a Japanese temple. In Japan, stone pagodas have long been built within temple grounds and revered as places of memorial services and prayer. To help visualize the historical background, we present a reference photo of a traditional pagoda at Shoonji Temple in Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture. This piece is thought to date from the Edo period (1600-1800s) and is intricately carved from what appears to be andesite, a type of stone often used in historical stonework in Japan. While many pagodas have simple shapes, this piece stands out for the clarity and depth of the carvings. In particular, the petal-like shape in the middle is reminiscent of a blooming lotus. The texture, naturally formed by years of exposure to wind and rain, speaks of the quiet dignity and elegance shaped by time. This alone gives this piece an unmistakable presence. Its spiritual and meditative form resonates with the unique aesthetic sense of East Asia and blends seamlessly into both gardens and interior spaces. Its compact size allows it to be displayed outdoors with stones and lanterns, or indoors as a sculptural focal point. The base is level and stable, making it easy to display as a standalone piece. There are no major cracks or structural damage, and the overall condition is good for its age. I believe such a complete and unique upper tier of a pagoda is rare, even in Japan. Highly recommended.
