About the Item

The **Townley Vase** is an ancient Roman marble vase, celebrated for its grand size, intricate relief carvings, and neoclassical influence. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, this monumental vase was discovered in the 18th century at Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli, Italy, and was later acquired by the British collector Charles Townley, for whom it is named. It is now housed in the British Museum. The vase has a large, deep bowl with a wide rim and is supported by a short, fluted base. One of its most striking features is the elaborate bas-relief decoration that wraps around its surface. The carvings typically depict mythological scenes, most notably a Bacchic procession, with figures of satyrs, maenads, and the god Bacchus (Dionysus), all celebrating in a lively, dynamic composition. These figures are rendered with great detail, showcasing flowing garments, expressive poses, and intricate facial expressions, conveying the exuberance of the scene. The handles of the **Townley Vase** are also notable, often taking the form of gracefully curving vines or scrolls that further enhance the vase’s classical elegance. The overall design of the vase reflects both Roman artistic traditions and the neoclassical revival that was popular in Europe during the 18th century when the vase was rediscovered. This vase has served as inspiration for numerous copies and reproductions in the form of garden ornaments, bronze sculptures, and decorative pieces, admired for its timeless beauty and masterful craftsmanship. The **Townley Vase** is a symbol of Roman luxury and artistic excellence, embodying both historical significance and aesthetic grandeur.

Impressive 19th Century Warwick Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive 19th century terracotta scale Warwick Vase standing on a weathered terracotta pedestal. Stamped ‘Blanchard & Co’, this particular design features in their 1869 illustrated catalogue of Beautiful Works of Art: Terracotta (pictured), so we are confident that it dates from this period. Though smaller than the original, this Warwick Vase is of impressive scale, standing at 1.5m tall. It comprises of 2 components: the decorative vase and its pedestal. The vase is detailed with an egg and dart moulded rim above male and female masks among vine leaves, berries and scrolls in high relief and entwined handles as it is in the original. The pedestal is simpler, featuring moulded wreath decoration, elevating the urn to eye level so that its grandeur can be closely observed. It is approximately 160 years old and as such features age-related weathering, chips, losses and historic restorations, each adding to the time-worn appeal of the piece. Core details of the vase remain intact making it instantly recognisable as the famous Warwick Vase. Provenance This terracotta Warwick Vase and pedestal was sourced from Bodfach Hall, a historic country house with expansive grounds in the heart of the Welsh Marches. It resided here in the gardens until recently as an impressive late 19th century item of statuary. The Warwick Vase The original Warwick Vase, often closely associated with the Albani Vase...
