About the Item

The **Warwick Vase** is a grand and intricately detailed ancient Roman marble vase, renowned for its size, craftsmanship, and historical significance. Originally discovered in fragments at Hadrian’s Villa near Tivoli in the late 18th century, the vase was restored and acquired by Charles Greville, the 2nd Earl of Warwick, hence its name. The vase features a massive, wide, and deep bowl, supported by a short pedestal base, making it ideal for use as a decorative garden or estate ornament. Its most distinctive elements are the highly detailed carvings and embellishments, including a pair of large handles shaped like intertwined vine stems or tendrils, often terminating in the heads of satyrs or other mythological figures. The body of the vase is adorned with intricate bas-relief sculptures of Bacchic scenes, featuring figures of satyrs, fauns, and Bacchantes in celebration, symbolizing the god Bacchus (Dionysus), the Roman god of wine and revelry. The Warwick Vase is made of white marble and is celebrated for its imposing size, measuring over 5 feet in diameter, and its neoclassical beauty. The vase has inspired numerous replicas in materials such as bronze and porcelain, and its design has been widely admired and reproduced in art, architecture, and interior design since its discovery. The original now resides in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, Scotland, while replicas and versions can be found in major museums and estates worldwide. The vase symbolizes both Roman luxury and the 18th-century neoclassical revival.

Impressive 19th Century Warwick Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive 19th century terracotta scale Warwick Vase standing on a weathered terracotta pedestal. Stamped ‘Blanchard & Co’, this particular design features in their 1869 illustrated catalogue of Beautiful Works of Art: Terracotta (pictured), so we are confident that it dates from this period. Though smaller than the original, this Warwick Vase is of impressive scale, standing at 1.5m tall. It comprises of 2 components: the decorative vase and its pedestal. The vase is detailed with an egg and dart moulded rim above male and female masks among vine leaves, berries and scrolls in high relief and entwined handles as it is in the original. The pedestal is simpler, featuring moulded wreath decoration, elevating the urn to eye level so that its grandeur can be closely observed. It is approximately 160 years old and as such features age-related weathering, chips, losses and historic restorations, each adding to the time-worn appeal of the piece. Core details of the vase remain intact making it instantly recognisable as the famous Warwick Vase. Provenance This terracotta Warwick Vase and pedestal was sourced from Bodfach Hall, a historic country house with expansive grounds in the heart of the Welsh Marches. It resided here in the gardens until recently as an impressive late 19th century item of statuary. The Warwick Vase The original Warwick Vase, often closely associated with the Albani Vase...
