1940s Day Basket Co. Handwoven White Oak Long Market Basket with Stamped Handle

About the Item

1940s Day Basket Co. Handwoven White Oak Long Market Basket with Stamped Handle This charming 1940s handwoven market basket by the Day Basket Company of Maryland is a beautiful and functional example of American craftsmanship. Expertly woven from durable white oak, the basket features a classic elongated rectangular form with a wide, arched handle stamped “Day Basket Co.” — a mark of authenticity and quality from one of the East Coast’s most respected traditional basket makers. Structurally sound and stable, this vintage market basket remains in very good condition, showing only gentle, age-appropriate wear. The weaving is tight and uniform, with no breaks or repairs, and the white oak has developed a warm, honey-toned patina that enhances its timeless appeal. Perfect for a variety of uses, this versatile antique basket can be styled as a farmhouse display piece, used to carry fresh flowers, produce, or picnic essentials, or employed as storage in a cottage-style interior. Its size and strength make it ideal for market shopping, while its visual appeal lends itself beautifully to rustic and Americana-inspired décor. Founded in Maryland, the Day Basket Company was known in the early-to-mid 20th century for producing high-quality handwoven baskets made from locally sourced hardwoods, especially white oak. Their baskets were both utilitarian and aesthetically refined, crafted by skilled weavers using traditional Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic techniques. Maryland has a long heritage of basket weaving, influenced by both Indigenous practices and early settler craftsmanship, making these pieces important artifacts of American folk art and domestic history. Antique handwoven baskets, especially those signed or stamped by known makers like Day Basket Co., are highly sought after by collectors of Americana, primitive décor, and vintage farmhouse accessories. Their authenticity, quality of materials, and enduring beauty make them desirable heirloom pieces. A stamped, intact white oak basket from the 1940s is particularly rare — most have been lost to time or wear — which makes this example both decorative and historically valuable.

Mattapoisett Basket, by Gladys Ellis, circa 1940s
Located in Nantucket, MA
Early Vintage Mattapoisett Basket, likely by Gladys Ellis, Mid 20th Century, a hand-crafted basket modeled after a Nantucket purse, having a flat oval "clamshell" lid hinged above an oval body, made of hand-stitched longleaf pine needles and raffia in braided and lace-like arrangements, with two braided raffia handles, a stitched hinge, and a silk lined interior, not signed. This is one of her very early baskets made before she started adding ivory tops and fixtures. The basket remains in strong original condition with no discernible breaks to the weave. There may have once been a loop closure at one point. Measures: 5-1/4 in H x 9 in L x 6-1/4 in W A local adaptation of a Nantucket basket first designed by Gladys Ellis (Mattapoisett: 1917 – 2011). The Mattapoisett basket is made in the shape and nature of a Nantucket basket, but uses southern yellow or longleaf pine needles and raffia coiled and sewn on a frame with a lace-like effect, often incorporating scrimshaw panels on the top and sides, sometimes as well as clasps and handle knobs...
