About the Item

This is an old basket made in Japan. The materials used are bamboo, mountain grape bark, and straw, giving it the warmth of natural materials. It was made in the early Showa period (1900s-1940s) and was used to collect vegetables, fruits, medicinal herbs, and wild plants in the fields and mountains. It was one of the tools that supported daily life in rural areas of Japan. All woven by hand by craftsmen, they are large, coarse, and somewhat wild. Hand-knitted baskets with such a sense of scale and presence are rarely seen today. The form, which stands out more for its strength than for its delicacy, is a crystallization of human wisdom and skill. Because these baskets have been used in daily life, they are both lean and sturdy. The basket appears to have been stored near a hearth for many years, and its entire surface is covered with soot, giving it a deep blackish-brown color. The sooty tint further enhances the beauty of the passage of time. It is a gem that embodies the spirit of “wabi-sabi” - powerful beauty in the midst of decay.
