About the Item

Signed Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket by Nishinaka Chikusei with Double Loop Handles Japan, Showa period (mid-20th century) Height: 23.4 cm Signed; with original tomobako (wooden storage box) and inner metal liner (otoshi) An exceptional hand-woven bamboo flower basket (hanakago) by the esteemed bamboo artist Nishinaka Chikusei (西中竹清). This large jar-shaped basket features a highly refined weave in warm reddish bamboo, with symmetrical loop handles (yūkan) mounted at the shoulders. The body is gracefully rounded, rising from a stable circular base and finished with a braided rim showcasing superb technical mastery. The interior is fitted with a removable metal liner (otoshi), allowing the piece to be used for ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). The underside is signed by the artist, and the basket is accompanied by its original signed tomobako (wood box), which authenticates the work. This piece reflects the Japanese tradition of refined utilitarian craft, where the harmony of form, function, and natural material reaches a meditative aesthetic. Ideal as both a functional vessel and a sculptural object for display. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minor signs of use. Provenance: Japan; private collection
