About the Item
This is a good late 18th century Worcester porcelain Slop bowl or Saucer Dish with a combined blue and gold pattern, fully marked and dating to circa 1780.
The bowl is decorated in a classical pattern of underglaze blue with hand gilded overglaze gold. By the 1770's Worcester was producing patterns just in gold or blue & gold, to suit the new classical taste of the period, probably led by Sevres, with the Worcester factory favouring a rim of fine dentil gilding, as with this piece. This piece has an upper blue border beneath a gold rim with a row of dentil gilding over the blue, with extended Prince of Wales feather motifs in gold below. The centre has a blue ring with a hand painted gold continuous intertwining leaf design.
The base carries a blue painted Worcester Crescent mark..
For further details and examples see The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain Vol. 1, 1751-1851, written by Henry Sandon for the Antique Collectors Club.
Overall a classical Worcester piece of the late 18th century.
