19th Century English Staffordshire Blue & White Marbleized Neoclassical Footbath

About the Item

19th Century English Staffordshire Blue & White Marbleized Neoclassical Footbath A generously scaled 19th-century English footbath in the rare and visually arresting blue and white marbleized glaze, attributed to Staffordshire, circa 1860–1880. This hand-formed earthenware vessel exemplifies the utilitarian elegance of Victorian hygiene wares, with a bold, painterly surface treatment and refined proportions rooted in Neoclassical design ideals—symmetry, purity of form, and classical restraint. Measuring an impressive 19 inches across the handles (16" W x 12" D x 8.5" H overall), the footbath features an elegant ovoid silhouette with a flared rim, flanking scrolled handles, and a low molded base. The interior is equally decorated in a profuse and fluid veining effect, achieved through a complex ceramic technique resembling mocha ware or dendritic slip marbling, where cobalt-colored slip is manipulated across a white ground to emulate veined marble—a nod to ancient Roman stonework, which deeply influenced the Neoclassical aesthetic. The inner basin, measuring 14.5" W x 11" D x 8" H, was originally intended for foot-soaking as part of personal hygiene in Victorian households. Today, it is prized for its versatile scale and striking surface, repurposed as a planter, wine cooler, towel holder, or centerpiece in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The base shows typical wear and mild age-related crazing consistent with 19th-century pottery. Unmarked, as is common for Staffordshire production of the period. Dimensions: 19" W (handle to handle) x 16" W x 12" D x 8.5" H Interior: 14.5" W x 11" D x 8" H Condition: Very good antique condition with light surface wear and age-appropriate patina.

This is an early 19th century porcelain desert dish with a fluted shell shape, made by one of the Staffordshire, English potteries and dating from the George 111rd period, circa 1820. This piece is unmarked to the base but we believe it is very well hand painted and could be by one of the high quality English makers such as Coalport or Davenport. Either way this piece is a beautifully hand decorated piece in a stunning Imari style pattern with carefully hand-gilded highlights. Overall a beautifully painted early English porcelain...
