About the Item

A rare early 19th century New England wooden chopping bowl in original blue-green paint with beautiful stitched repairs and rich patina. An extraordinary example of early American utilitarian craftsmanship, this rare New England hardwood chopping bowl dates to the early 19th century and retains its stunning original blue-green painted surface. Its large, slightly oval form (21” x 22”) rises to an impressive 8” height, creating a dramatic presence whether displayed on a table or wall. Beautiful signs of age—two graceful shrinkage cracks reinforced with period wire stitches—speak to generations of valued use and add soulful character to this already exceptional piece. The surface shows a deep, soft patina, with paint worn to a moody, luminous finish that is almost painterly in its tonal variations. Dimensions: 8” H x 21” W x 22” D Condition: Two shrinkage cracks reinforced with early wire stitching; expected paint wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and visually stunning. A museum-worthy example for advanced collectors of Americana, primitive kitchenware, or painted country antiques. Provenance: Estate of Brenda Joziatis, Canterbury, New Hampshire.

Large 19th Century Burl Walnut Bowl with Iron Repairs and Handles
Located in Atlanta, GA
A substantial 19th-century carved burl walnut bowl with a powerful rustic presence, generous proportions, and layered history. Measuring approximately 29.75 inches wide, 25.5 inches deep, and 7 inches high, this oval vessel was hewn from a single piece of dense walnut and bears the textured marks of time and repeated use. The surface is worn smooth from handling, yet still retains areas of rugged character—tool marks, subtle variations in tone, and a visible patched repair in hammered iron on one side. A second repair is visible underneath, where iron straps were applied across an old split—evidence of the piece’s practical value and the care taken to preserve it. Flat-handled grips at either end are integrated into the carved form, enhancing functionality without interrupting the clean silhouette. Ideal as a dramatic centerpiece or sculptural accent on a farmhouse table or console, this antique bowl...
