About the Item
A refined and richly detailed Chinese export porcelain punch bowl, Qianlong period (1735–1795), Qing Dynasty. Decorated in the famille-rose palette, the exterior features two large landscape cartouches depicting animated European-style hunt scenes, framed by scrolling foliage and set against a luminous white ground. The interior is centered with a roundel of a sportsman and hounds, enclosed within a lambrequin border that repeats along the inner rim.
This bowl exemplifies the sophistication and cross-cultural appeal of Chinese export porcelain during the 18th century—a period when Chinese artisans at Jingdezhen, the imperial porcelain capital, were producing highly specialized wares for European markets. These objects combined centuries of technical mastery with motifs tailored to Western tastes, including heraldic arms, maritime scenes, and European leisure pursuits such as hunting.
By the mid-1700s, Chinese export porcelain had become one of the most coveted luxury goods in Europe and colonial America. It not only furnished the great houses of Britain, France, and the Netherlands, but also profoundly shaped European decorative arts—spurring entire industries like Delftware, Meissen, and later English porcelain in response to the demand and aesthetics of Chinese models.
This example, with its finely painted narrative scenes and architectural scale, is both a functional object and a document of global trade and aesthetic exchange. It has undergone museum-quality restoration to a small hairline, invisible to the eye; the glaze is fresh and the bowl rings clearly when tapped.
An outstanding example of Qing dynasty export ware, marrying technical virtuosity with historical significance.
