Highly Detailed French Gilt Bronze and Glass Centerpiece Jardiniere, Circa 1885

About the Item

Dating to circa 1885, the amount of detail on this French gilt bronze and glass jardiniere is quite amazing. The result is a beautiful, pierced oval main body that is topped by a highly sinuous glass liner with angular barbs at the apexes. Beneath the rim of the glass are several layers of repeating motifs, with each tier depicting a different décor. The top row consists of a series of eight-petaled florets surmounting scrolled cartouches. On the longer sides, a large crinkle ribbon bow obscures some of the cartouches, as well as the small repeating loops with small rosettes on the tier below. Aligned with the ribbons are a pair of scrolled console noix with foliate mascarons, with the top of the head covering part of a row of floral vines. Above the vines is an amazing foliate rinceau that forms the origination point of four monpodial feet depicted as griffins with wings displayed. On each of the short sides is a pair of dolphins with foliate bodies that function as elaborate handles. Our highly detailed gilt bronze and glass jardiniere is very versatile, as it can be used as a decorative accessory, vide poche, or dining table centerpiece.
