About the Item
Ceramic bowl with an abstract sgraffito decoration by James and Nan McKinnell.
Jim and Nan studied ceramics at the University of Washington. Jim and Nan moved to Colorado in 1951, where they both taught pottery classes at the University of Colorado. Shortly after their daughter Kate was born in 1952, they moved to Helena, Montana and the Archie Bray Foundation to learn from Rudio Autio and Peter Voulkos, and teach classes. For almost 20 years after that they travelled and taught ceramics. In 1970 they returned to Colorado where they continued to teach until 1987. Their works are held by Everson Art Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York and National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC among others.
