Josef Hospodka for Chribska Blue and Orange Sommerso Bowl, Czech Art Glass
About the Item
Striking sculptural footed bowl with manipulated rim features blue and deep orange colored glass core, encased in clear glass in sommerso technique. The graphic, free-flowing rim creates an organic mood and guides the eye along the piece.
The bowl's design, a part of pattern range 316 created in 1950s - 1960s, is attributed to Josef Hospodka by multiple veritable printed and online sources, including Czechoslovak Glass Review magazine, 1963.
We are offering a similar Chribska Glassworks bowl from the same pattern range, but in smokey amethyst colorway, in a separate listing; it is marked with Bohemia Glass foil sticker of Crystalex/Chribska factories that was in use in 2nd half of 20th century, allowing for an easy identification.
Sklarna Chribska was founded in early 15th century and is thought to be one of the oldest glassworks still in operation in Europe. In 1882 it passed into hands of Mayer family, who run it until the Second World War; during 1950s it was absorbed into Borske Sklo, along with Moser and Mstisov.
Josef Hospodka, previously a head of the blown glass studio at Umelecke Sklo, was Chribska's chief designer from early 1950s to 1970s. Hospodka was a highly respected designer in Czechoslovakia, and his fluid, organic design style was very successful commercially, with some of his pieces remaining in Chribska's production until the end of 1980s. One of Hospodka's best-known designs is the Chribska glass lamp that won a gold medal at the Brussels World Fair in 1958; he won several awards for his work at Chribska, including a gold medal at the Montreal World's Fair in 1967. His contribution to glass design is considered an important part of Czech cultural heritage.
