About the Item

Highly rare and extraordinary in subject matter and palette, this low, footed Art Deco bowl by A. Mourier depicts six nude male figures around its circumference, arm in arm and hand in hand, all painted in a fiery red glaze on a brilliant gold ground. The bowl may indicate brotherly love or mankind linked in common cause given that it was made two years after the end of World War II. Mourier's work bears a resemblance, at times, to the work of his more famous peer in ceramic arts -- Jean Mayodon -- but Mourier brings his own sensibility and sense of color to his work. His pieces are rare, though a group of vases and bowls from the Seymour Stein collection sold at Rago not long ago. The piece is signed and dated on the bottom.
