About the Item

This adorable Scandinavian modern ceramic bowl, crafted between 1958-61, is adorned with an "ear of grain" motif, exemplifying the renowned Swedish ceramic design of the mid-20th century. The textured decor is rich and tactile, making it a delight to hold. Stamped on the bottom with "UE Sweden, MS," and serial number 4328, this bowl proudly bears the unmistakable mark of Mari Simmulson. Mari Simmulson, a prominent Swedish ceramic designer, created the Ax series for Upsala-Ekeby in 1958. The name "Ax" means "ear of grain" in Swedish. The "Ax" series consists of earthenware objects with a grey background and incised white grain decor. The collection includes 12 bowls and vases, each marked on the bottom with "UE," the model number, and Mari Simmulson's initials (MS or Maris). This series was produced until 1961. Mari Simmulson (1911-2000) was a distinguished figure in Swedish ceramic design, known for her innovative techniques and prolific creativity. Educated as a sculptor and ceramicist in Tallinn, Estonia, she later worked at Arabia ceramics in Finland before joining Wilhelm Kåge's studio at Gustavsberg in Sweden. In 1949, she began her tenure at Upsala-Ekeby, where she introduced techniques with nitrates, expanding the artistic possibilities of ceramic painting. Her extensive and varied body of work earned her a place among the leading designers of her time, and she is represented in prestigious institutions such as the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.
