About the Item

Pauline Solven’s blown and applied glass bowl features asymmetrical, free-flowing rim and cobalt blue and soft mocha brown fused applied glass band, reminiscent of blooming flowers. The inclusion of small controlled bubbles in the clear glass layer of the bowl created an illusion of movement and adds depth and complexity to the composition within the minimal color palette. This bowl is stylistically similar to her another glass bowl presented in the "There at the beginning: Early Studio Glass from the Parkman Collection" at The Corning Museum of Glass. The bowl is signed by the artist on the bottom near the pontil mark; it is not dated. Born in Great Britain in 1943, Solven studied glass at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1965-1968, where a small furnace had been set up by Sam Herman, a former student of Harvey Littleton. In 1969 she became one of the co-founding members of Sam Herman's Glasshouse Studio, the first place in England where the public could watch glass artists at work in the studios; many significant British studio glass artists were associated with it, including Jane Bruce, Annette Meech, Christopher Williams, Steven Newell, David Taylor, Fleur Tookey, Catherine Hough, and Simon Moore. Solven founded her own studio, Ravenshill, in 1975, and co-founded Cowdy Glass Workshop with husband Harry Cowdy in 1978, while continuing working at Ravenshill. Solven's work had been featured by many galleries, such as Heong Gallery, Sunderland Arts Centre, and Downing College, and represented in museums, such as Victoria and Albert Museum, Corning Museum of Glass, and Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, among others. She is a member of The Contemporary Glass Society and The Contemporary Art Society.

Nicholson Fused Glass Bowl, 1992, American Art Studio Glass
By Rick & Janet Nicholson
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage glass bowl in biomorphic shape was created by Rick and Janet Nickolson in 1992; it features a pair of abstract patterns in pink, cream, and white glass fused on thin, almost transparent green glass background. The green color deepens around the heavier base, creating a contrast with the light, ethereal body of the bowl. The bowl is signed and dated on the base near the bottom. Rick and Janet Nicholson of Nicholson Blown Glass Studio have worked together as a successful team since 1979. Rick first studied glass with Don Hartman and the University of Southern California and was a TA at Pilchuck Glass School for Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach in 1981; he continued to study with such notables as Therman Statom...

Aureliano Toso 'Attributed' Murano Art Glass Bowl, 1950s
By Dino Martens, Aureliano Toso
Located in Berghuelen, DE
Aureliano Toso (attr.) Murano Art Glass Bowl, 1950s A Murano glass bowl most probably manufactured by Vetreria Aureliano Toso and designed by Dino Martens circa 1950s. Blue transparent glass with mulitcoloured glass and silver foil inclusions. Coming from a family of Murano glassmakers, Aureliano Toso founded his own company in 1938. The collaboration with the painter and artist Dino Martens already showed the first successes at the XXIII Biennale di Venezia. Over the years, more daring creations followed, which, as with Pop Art, were clearly far ahead of their time. Later, the influence of artists like Gino Poli and Enrico Potz...
