About the Item

1930s Art Deco Uranium Glass Long Dish in a Geometric Faceted Octagon Form This exquisite 1930s uranium glass dish exemplifies the bold geometry and clean lines of the Art Deco era, with an elongated faceted octagon shape that reflects light beautifully and adds sculptural presence to any surface. Crafted in a classic translucent green, this piece is a glowing example of the uranium glass tradition, prized for its soft radiance by day and luminous glow under UV light. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, this piece is as functional as it is collectible — ideal for use as a serving dish, jewelry tray, or striking Art Deco display object. Uranium glass, sometimes called Vaseline glass, was first developed in the 19th century and reached peak popularity between the 1920s and 1940s. During the Art Deco period, American glassmakers embraced this material for its otherworldly color and ability to hold clean, architectural forms, a perfect match for the movement’s modernist ideals. To create uranium glass, small amounts of uranium dioxide were added to the glass mixture before firing, producing shades ranging from pale yellow-green to deeper olive tones. When exposed to ultraviolet (black) light, the uranium content causes the glass to fluoresce vividly, a signature characteristic that fascinates collectors to this day. Production of uranium glass declined after the 1940s due to safety concerns and shifting wartime regulations on uranium use. Today, it is no longer produced for mainstream use, making authentic pieces from the early 20th century increasingly rare and desirable. In the United States, celebrated makers like Fostoria, Tiffin Glass Company, Cambridge Glass, and Hazel-Atlas crafted elegant uranium glassware during this golden period of decorative design. This long dish may have originated from one of these prominent firms, showcasing their commitment to both form and function.
