About the Item

Nice & Beautiful Arita Japanese Porcelain Vase, beaker shape. This is a beautiful 17th-century Japanese Arita porcelain vase, likely dating to the second half of the 1600s during the Edo period. The decoration is executed in underglaze cobalt blue and features a dynamic and auspicious scene, rich in symbolic elements: Decoration Description: Main Motif: The body of the vase is adorned with a continuous, finely painted scene of a lion (shishi or karashishi) frolicking among bamboo and peony blossoms. These mythological lion-dogs are protectors and often symbolize strength and good fortune. The pairing with bamboo and peonies further emphasizes resilience, prosperity, and longevity. Border Designs: The upper border, around the flared rim, displays a pattern of vertical plantain or lappet leaves, a typical motif in Arita ware influenced by Chinese Ming transitional ceramics. The lower section above the foot is encircled by a scrolling wave and cloud band, grounding the scene and enhancing the balance of the composition. Glaze and Surface: The glaze shows areas of fine crazing (crackling), common in early Arita porcelain, and adds a layer of authenticity and charm. The body shape is that of a tall beaker or trumpet vase, typical of export wares made for both domestic and foreign markets. This vase is a fine example of mid- to late-17th-century Japanese porcelain, combining Chinese decorative inspiration with native Japanese aesthetics. The powerful subject matter and well-balanced decoration suggest it was a luxury object, possibly intended for export or a high-status Japanese household. Condition There's a repainted section to the rim which is al partly visible at the outside rim. Probably to hide filled chip or fritting.
