This exquisite antique porcelain plate was made by Barr Flight Barr Worcester, in England, between 1807 and 1813. At its center, it features a finely hand-painted depiction of a cone shell, Conus textile, rendered in soft tones of ivory and reddish brown with coral fronds. The beautiful central image is framed by a gorgeous aqua band, while the outer edge features neoclassical gilt motifs on a white ground. Shell painting, like this, reflects the Regency period’s fascination with marine biology and global exploration, and is driven by the influence of newly published conchological illustrations.
