Antique Qing Dynasty Chinese Porcelain Plate Dish Family Life, 1730

About the Item

Sharing with you this very nicely Dutch decorated Chinese Porcelain plate. What you see is a Jingdezhen made porcelain plate from around 1730-1750. Later decorated in Holland. The image depicts a family scene, with a woman holding a child’s hand and a man standing next to her, all in 18th-century clothing. Such imagery is typical of Delftware or other European ceramics from the 1700s, often inspired by contemporary prints and engravings of the time. These kinds of genre scenes were frequently based on popular engraved prints that circulated in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, France, and England during the 17th and 18th centuries. They reflected everyday life, family values, and societal roles, which were then adapted for decorative purposes on objects like porcelain and ceramics. It’s possible that this scene is derived from one of those widely circulated engravings or prints that focused on family life, which was a popular theme in the decorative arts. Artists like Jan van der Heyden or Nicholas Visscher, or even French Rococo engravers, often produced such works. The subject matter aligns with the Enlightenment era‘s focus on the importance of family, domestic life, and moral values. A scene from around 1750 where a woman holds a man by his arm, a child stands next to her with their hand raised holding something, and the woman places her hand on the child’s head while looking at the man, who in turn looks at the child, likely holds symbolic and emotional meaning. In artworks from this period, these elements could refer to themes such as family bonds, care, responsibility, and inheritance.
