We are pleased to offer this pair of blue and white Dutch Delft dishes with lovely chinoiserie decoration, which features an image of a vase overflowing with flowers. Around the vase and flowers is a wide border with symbols of good fortune in the *Wan Li style (Wan Li was the Emperor of China from 1572-1620). Our pair of dishes are decorative, with a beautiful design, and would make a great addition to any collection of blue and white. Measures: Diameter 8.75 inches Condition:: Excellent (slight edge frits invisibly restored) Price: $450 for the pair * During the reign of Wan LI and for decades afterward, many Chinese Blue and White porcelains had borders that incorporated the symbols of good fortune. History of Delft Delft is a type of earthenware that is low-fired pottery and is porous unless sealed with a glaze. The Delft glaze is essentially a very thin layer of glass deposited on the piece's surface and fused to it when fired in the kiln. Over 1000 years ago, potters in the Middle East discovered that by adding 10-15 percent white tin ash to the glaze, they could create an opaque white surface that would be more conducive to decoration with colors than the original brown clay body. The use of white glaze over a dark or buff-colored pottery body created a "canvas" on which painters could now show brilliant colors that did not appear well on the darker bodies of the earlier dark colored pottery. In the Middle ages, Middle East potters took the technique to Spain and Italy. The technique spread to Holland and England in the third quarter of the 16th century. During this period,d the city of Delft became the premiere center for this type of pottery, known today as "Delf.".
