Japanese Contemporary Red White Gold Porcelain Charger by Renowned Kiln

About the Item

Contemporary Japanese large Ko-Imari (old Imari) charger in an exquisitely shaped porcelain, crafted and signed by renowned Kiln of the Imari-Arita region of Japan, and is inspired by shapes and designs popularized in the mid-19th century. This exquisite piece depicts the traditional “Sho-Chiku-Bai” or “Three Friends of Winter” motif consisting of pine, bamboo and plum, commonly used in New Year’s decorations in Japanese homes. The pine tree symbolizes strength, bamboo symbolizes longevity, and the plum tree in its wintry bloom represents beauty and hopeful anticipation. It is accentuated by intricate patterns and the generous use of gold. This elegant porcelain charger comes in a custom made wooden case. Dimensions: W 15 in, D 9.5 in, H 2.5 in.

It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable. The trunk and the branches of the old cherry tree provide a spacial frame for the arrangement of large peonies with foliage, bundles of chrysanthemums, Chinese bell...
