Large Iconic Mid-Century Ceramic Art Piece by French Maker Verceram '1930-1971'

About the Item

Mid-century modern at its very best. An iconic piece of authentic mid-century French art pottery. Most collectible! This incredible piece, it would be an understatement to simple call it a fruit bowl, was made by the French ceramic company Verceram in the 1960s (see makers mark on the base). The company, located in Montreuil an eastern suburb to Paris, produced high-end avant-garde collections between the 1930s and 1971, date of its closure. During the 1960s they became known for their bold contrasts and groovy shapes, designs that could have come from another galaxy. The production was made for the domestic market, so Verceram pieces are rarely found outside of France. Today their very quirky pieces with their unusual shapes and contrasts are very sought after by design aficionados and collectors. This large model #6763 (see base mark), often called the whale due to its particular shape, has the very sought after (ie Verceram trademark) blue iridescent glaze on the upper surface as well as underneath (only the asymmetrical rims are glazed in cream). The iridescent metallic effect was notoriously difficult to make, the finish is very delicate and prone to damage. The fact that the glaze scratches so easily makes it hard to find items in good condition. This is definitely a statement piece; not only because of its' impressive size but also because of its' eye-catching shape and color. In good vintage condition. This very large vintage piece only has one small chip underneath the rim (see photo), not visible when displayed in an normal up-right position. As a result of its very delicate surface, there are traces of wear on the iridescent surface coherent with age and wear. Please note that it is very difficult to do justice to the striking iridescent surface and its details on photo. Dimension: length (width) 69 cm/ 27", depth 21 cm/ 8 1/'", height 23.5 cm/ 9". Weight: 3507 g/ 7.73 lbs.
