About the Item

An early 1940's first era silverplate tray with mate finish by Los Castillo in Taxco, Mexico. The round tray is decorated with shooting stars in sgraffito technique. The tray is marked on the bottom LOS CASTILLO TAXCO and numbered 110. Platería Los Castillo is a silver and metal workshop founded in 1939 by the brothers Miguel, Antonio "Tony", Justo "Coco" and Jorge "Chato" Castillo. They were disciples of William Spratling at the Taller Las Delicias during the 1930's. It was with Spratling's blessing that they started their own company, which was the center of development of many important silversmiths like Miguel Meléndez, Enrique Ledesma, Sigi Pineda, Salvador Terán (cousin of the brothers), Margot van Voorhies (former wife of Antonio's), among others. The creativity of the workshop allowed them to create an outstanding variety of silver jewelry and luxury item in silverplate, brass, alpaca and copper.
