"Male Nude and Serpent, " Art Deco Dish by Cazaux in Blue and Gray, 1920s
About the Item
Shaped and painted in gorgeous blue and gray glazes by Edouard Cazaux, master sculptor and ceramicist who exemplified the French Art Deco style at its finest, this ceramic dish or bowl features a nude male figure in combat with a large serpent. Cazaux studied at the Beaux Arts School in Sèvres as a young man, and participated in the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which later gave the Art Deco style its name) in 1925, as part of the "Evolution of Style" exhibition in the Arthur Goldscheider pavilion. Beautifully realized, this depiction of a male nude leaning against a rock formation shows the stylization characteristic of the Modern or Art Deco movement of the 1920s, as well as indications of fractured surfaces and tilted planes associated with Cubism. The artist was known for his Surrealist works in the late 19th century, and was associated with the mystical, religiously-saturated Salons de Rose...
