About the Item

This exceptional set of eight Dutch Delft plates was hand painted circa 1780, each one capturing a richly imagined rural landscape with timeless charm. Painted in a vivid palette of manganese, ochre, iron red, and green, the scenes evoke thatched cottages nestled among trees and craggy rockwork, bordered by expressive floral and foliate scrolls that frame the composition. The painterly style is spontaneous and joyful, with each plate offering subtle variations in detail and brushwork—reminders that these were individually created by hand nearly 250 years ago. Together, they form a rare group that speaks to the artistry and warmth of 18th-century Dutch Delftware. Whether displayed on a wall or laid across a long table, this set is a celebration of color, craft, and the beauty of Delft pottery. Dimensions: 9.1"-9.2" diameter Condition: Good. Minor edge chips consistent with age and typical of antique Delft (see close-ups). Price: $720 Background of Polychrome Colored Delft: In the 15th century, in the towns of Faenza and Urbino, Italian potters created ceramics with an opaque white, tin-based glaze on fired clay, which served as a ground for polychrome enamel painting. This Italian pottery, locally referred to as Maiolica or Faience, was richly decorated with polychrome colors. These wares were transported from Italy to the Netherlands. In the 16th century, a small group of Italian potters established factories in the Netherlands, making the first polychrome Dutch Delft.
