About the Item

A Rare Wood and Silvered Bronze French Cigar Humidor by Charles Guillaume Diehl and Jean Brandely, C. 1860, Paris This extraordinary cigar humidor, crafted by the esteemed French artisans Charles Guillaume Diehl and Jean Brandely, is a masterpiece of the 19th-century French decorative arts. A rare and significant object, it combines the finest materials and the highest level of craftsmanship, offering a window into the opulent world of French luxury design. The humidor’s blend of fine wood, silvered bronze mounts, and expert metalworking exemplifies the sophisticated artistry of the period and serves as a testament to the technical skill and creative vision of Diehl and Brandely. This exceptional piece transcends its functional role, elevating the everyday object to the realm of high art. The Artisans: Charles Guillaume Diehl and Jean Brandely Charles Guillaume Diehl (1834–1901) was a French sculptor, metalworker, and designer, celebrated for his ability to fuse artistry with craftsmanship. His career was marked by a deep commitment to the creation of luxurious, functional objects that reflected both technical mastery and artistic innovation. Diehl was particularly well-known for his work in bronze, often combining this material with other precious elements such as wood, marble, and ivory. His approach was inspired by classical forms, particularly from the Rococo and Neoclassical periods, blending them with his own distinctive artistic sensibilities. Jean Brandely, Diehl’s collaborator on this exceptional humidor, was another prominent figure in the French decorative arts movement. While Brandely's individual career is less widely known than Diehl’s, his work as a founder and metalworker, particularly in partnership with Diehl, remains highly regarded for its precision and elegance. Brandely was skilled in the art of casting and finishing bronzes, and his collaboration with Diehl on this humidor exemplifies the high standards of craftsmanship that were hallmarks of the period. Design and Craftsmanship: A Fusion of Fine Wood and Silvered Bronze The humidor’s design reflects the finest qualities of 19th-century French luxury, merging functionality with artistic beauty. Constructed from rich, finely grained wood, the humidor offers a warm, inviting appearance. The wood's patina has been expertly maintained, enhancing its natural luster and giving the piece a sense of timeless elegance. The use of wood, traditionally associated with the warmth and comfort of the home, serves as a perfect backdrop for the more dramatic silvered bronze mounts, creating a harmonious contrast between the natural and the metal. The humidor’s silvered bronze mounts, cast with exceptional detail, provide the key decorative elements of the piece. These mounts, applied to the corners and edges of the humidor, are finely wrought, with intricate scrollwork, floral motifs, and classical detailing. They speak to the luxurious taste of the era and the skilled hand of the artisans responsible for their creation. The silvered finish of the bronze lends a luminous, cool contrast to the rich warmth of the wood, while the finely detailed casting of the bronze itself speaks to the superior metalworking technique of Diehl and Brandely. Symbolism and Functionality As a humidor, this piece served a very specific function in the context of 19th-century French society. During this period, cigars were not just a commodity, but a symbol of sophistication and leisure, especially among the elite. A well-crafted humidor was an essential item for those who appreciated the finer things in life, and the humidor's function as a preservation vessel for cigars was intertwined with its role as a symbol of social status. The act of preserving cigars was a ritual associated with wealth, refinement, and the leisurely lifestyle of the upper classes. An Exquisite and Rare French Louis XVI Style Ormolu-Mounted Bloodstone Inkwell
Located in Queens, NY
An Exquisite and Rare French Louis XVI Style Ormolu-Mounted Bloodstone Inkwell, circa 1875. A truly exceptional and jewel like quality inkwell encrier, made with the finest ormolu, mounted on bloodstone. A true collectors and one of a kind piece. Revival of the ancient régime in the late 19th century was paramount to the French furniture and bronze casting firms of the Belle Epoque. Imitation in the highest regard and replication of those tastes and styles was prevalent throughout the Paris Faubourg, where the most talented bronziers and ébénistes established their workshops. The present inkwell encrier recalls the late 18th century's obsession with hardstones - a taste expounded above all by the duc d'Aumont and, subsequently Marie-Antoinette. Such hardstone-mounted pieces, reminiscent of Renaissance schatzkammer objects, enjoyed a revived popularity at the end of the 18th century through the impetus of both the marchands-mercier and, more importantly, the hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs, where the duc d'Aumont himself established a workshop in 1770 specializing in the cutting and polishing of precious hardstones. This exceptional inkwell encrier, sumptuously-mounted with finely chased gilt-bronzes, incorporates a highly-prized material such as bloodstone. Sometimes called the Sunstone, the meaning of Bloodstone comes entangled in fascinating history. The Ancient Greeks held the Bloodstone as a gem with glorious powers. They referred to it as Heliotrope, which directly translates to Sunstone. It was believed to have heavenly healing powers gifted by the gods and most certainly when it came to healing all things related to the blood. Even as we move forward into the Middle Ages, the Bloodstone takes another mystical story under its wing. It was believed to be formed from Christ's blood. It was said that during the Crucifixion, a few red spots of his blood dripped...
