About the Item

1920s French Art Deco Aladin Hand-Painted Porcelain Hair Receiver / Covered Vanity Jar This exquisite 1920s French Art Deco porcelain hair receiver by Aladin is a striking example of the period’s marriage of geometry, elegance, and hand-crafted artistry. The jar is beautifully symmetrical, measuring 3.5 x 3.5 inches, with a removable lid that features a central opening designed as a receptacle. Originally created as a “hair receiver”, a vanity accessory used to collect hair from brushes, it can just as easily serve today as a covered jar, small vase, or decorative accent for a dressing table. The decoration is both bold and refined. The surface is hand-painted in alternating yellow and white stripes, outlined in black for crisp contrast, and accented with burgundy oval and circular motifs that echo the rhythm of Art Deco design. Around the rim of the lid, delicate swags of roses soften the geometric pattern, while the uppermost surface is finished in glossy jet black with hand-drawn curving lines, creating a dramatic focal point. The base is hand-signed “Aladin, Made in France.” French Art Deco porcelain of the 1920s represents a golden era of innovation when designers fused traditional porcelain-making with avant-garde style. Makers such as Robj, Limoges, and Édouard-Marcel Sandoz became celebrated for their modern interpretations of porcelain objects, often producing figural works, decorative vessels, and luxurious vanity accessories. While Robj porcelain is famous for its whimsical figural decanters and Limoges for its high-quality decorative wares, Aladin distinguished itself with rare hand-painted geometric and floral designs, making its creations especially unique within the broader landscape of French Art Deco porcelain. This rare survivor remains in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, scratches, or repairs to note. Both collectible and versatile, it can be admired as a historic vanity accessory, displayed as a small vase, or repurposed as a covered jar for jewelry, cotton pads, or other personal treasures.
