Antique American Folk Art Tramp Art Carved Box

About the Item

Antique American Folk Art Tramp Art Carved Box, probably Late 19th/Early 20th Century. A decorative box ornamented with layers of classic Tramp Art chip carved borders enclosing velvet ground panels centered by elongated star or diamond type decorations. The box has a rustic feel and is a wonderful example of folk art that really shows the hand of its maker- there are variations in the way the carved decoration has been built up into layers, small splits where the decoration has been nailed into place, and slightly differing tones to the patina/color suggestive of the use of differing materials. These organic qualities add to its charm, and the box has a beautiful sense of proportion which speaks to the talents of its maker. One of the most collectible forms of American Folk Art today, Tramp Art flourished in the last quarter of the 19th Century and first quarter of the 20th Century. During this time itinerant workers from factories and farms started to make a distinctive form of wood art using discarded materials they had access to, favoring soft woods from things like cigar boxes and shipping crates. Tramp art is distinguished by its exceptional carved decoration, which is often geometric in form and arranged into layers, and it took many forms including decorative boxes, picture frames and mirrors.
