Antique English Mother of Pearl & Rosewood Writing Box Hausburg

About the Item

Firmly Attributed to Hausburg From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Victorian Writing Box attributed to Hausburg. The Writing Box of rectangular shape made from Rosewood features a pleather of iridescent Mother of Pearl inlays to the front and to the lid. The Mother of Pearl inlay features floral swags framing central scenes with butterflies, trees, peacocks and a male and female deer within the woodland. The exterior of the box is finished with twin loop handles which fit flush into their brass housing. When opened the Writing Box reveals a blue velvet writing slope faced in ebony and strengthened with pewter inlay to the corners, typical of Hausburg. The top and bottom half of the writing slope lifts to reveal extra storage beneath and the top of the box contains partitions for the two inkwells and removable pen tray. The top half of the writing box contains a secret compartment which can be accessed by pushing the right wall of the right hand side inkwell which activates the spring loaded false wall in front of the three secret drawer compartments. The Writing Box dates to the 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1860. The Box is unsigned but we are confident this is a model executed by Hausburg of Liverpool, England. The Writing Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key. Measurements (centimetres) 15cm High x 41cm Wide x 27cm Deep Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer. Hausburg (Friedrich Ludwig Hausburg) a renowned artisan and craftsman, was born in Berlin, Prussia, in 1817. He commenced his professional journey in collaboration with his uncle, August Wilhelm Bernhardt Promoli, who operated from Paris, where they specialized in producing opulent items of fine jewellery, exquisite clocks, and a plethora of other luxury items. During their tenure as expert cabinet makers, they gradually expanded their repertoire to include the manufacturing of an extensive range of luxurious writing and dressing cases, amongst a few other exquisite items, which they retailed in Liverpool As time progressed, Friedrich Ludwig Hausburg’s fame as a cabinet maker grew, and his exceptional craftsmanship was widely acknowledged. His dedication to excellence and uncompromising attention to detail enabled him to become an authority in his field, renowned for producing exceptional, high-quality products that were highly sought after. In summary, Friedrich Ludwig Hausburg’s journey began as an apprentice under the tutelage of his uncle in Paris, where he honed his skills and expertise in crafting luxurious items. His eventual specialization in producing elegant writing and dressing cases, amongst other luxurious goods, is a testament to his exceptional craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to producing exquisite and high-quality products. Rosewood has many variations. Indian Rosewood, Madagascan Rosewood, Mexican Rosewood, Rio Rosewood, Brazilian Rosewood, San Dominican and Santos Rosewood. All types are prized for their grain and colour. Generally, the colours range from a medium-dark red-reddish brown.
