Contemporary Keepsake Box in Elm and Fumed Oak 'Family Tree' by Edward Johnson

$11,417.43per item

About

The contemporary 'Family Tree' keepsake box by Edward Johnson forms part of his Murano Collection. The pieces in this collection all utilise Edward Johnson’s unique ‘Murano’ veneers that have been developed and produced in his workshop. The concept behind the Family Tree keepsake box is to subtly represent the generations of your family. This piece is a contemporary twist on a traditional family tree, designed to evoke a slice through a tree trunk. Handmade from hundreds of thin strips of timber, the curved pattern represents the annual growth rings of a tree, with darker woods symbolising each family members’ year of birth. The radial pattern is formed by cutting, bending and meticulously configuring hundreds of strips of timber, giving careful consideration to tone and contrast. The textured end of the box takes its inspiration from traditional Hakone marquetry and Tunbridge ware and is created from a miniaturised pattern of end grain. The box pivots from one corner allowing the lid to swivel open to allow access to a shallow upper tray, which also opens to reveal a deeper second tray. The Family Tree keepsake box is made to order and is a limited-edition of 10. The keepsake box is shown here in elm and fumed oak. The box can be made in a range of different timbers, for example, oak, walnut, ash and olive ash. Please get in contact to discuss your options. Edward Johnson’s unique circular maker’s mark is inlaid into each box. Dated and hallmarked by The Goldsmiths’ Company assay office (UK); this solid silver maker’s mark adds an elegant finishing touch. Perhaps made more poignant, as it is finely etched with Edward’s fingerprint, a legacy to the craftsman’s touch. Dimensions: 38cm (W) x 15cm (H) x 23.5cm (D).
