English 19th Century Trinity House Dressing Box with Three Masted Schooner Inlay

About the Item

English rosewood 19th century Trinity House dressing box with perspective cube inlay to three sides and a British three masted square rigged schooner inlaid to the top; she is sailing on a white capped sea. Various woods were used for the inlays including ebony, rosewood, walnut, satinwood, boxwood and sycamore. The interior is original with tartan paper in the top and a lift out dressing tray with three lidded inlaid compartments . Circa 1870 Trinity House is the name for the lighthouse keepers service, members of whom take care of lighthouses and other navigational aides including buoys in shipping channels. Trinity House boxes were beautifully crafted by lighthouse keepers while on station and were primarily marketed to ship captains and owners. They generally depict nautical scenes of ships, shipping and lighthouses. They were also made for gifts for family members.

  • Condition:
    Repaired: Some veneer was loose and that was stabilized; the interior tray had a crack in one of the dividers and that was glued and polished. The box has been through our workshop so it is now in excellent condition. Wear consistent with age and use.

    English 19th century burl walnut writing box of unusual interior conformation. The exterior of the box is inlaid with a transitional English ship, having both sail and steam capabilities , sailing on the open seas. She is made of ebony, boxwood and sails on a sycamore sea. The front panel is inlaid in perspective cube made of boxwood, satinwood, sycamore and ebony enclosed with delicate stringing. the end panels are of lively walnut and the back panel is in flame mahogany; all are enclosed by delicate stringing..
