About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely and very rare James Cawston dressing case make gentleman’s military campaign vanity box 1836 A very collectable and rare piece, the case is rosewood which was very popular in the William IV era. The jar lids are all sterling silver and fully hallmarked inside the lid with the sideways facing head for William IV, the sideways facing Lion for Sterling, the panther head for London and the date letter A for 1836 The case has all the original contents from what I can see, the original key is present although the locks are rather temperamental, you have a lockable side tray, the main body of the case which has removable sections for storage, in the top you have a document sleeve and the original mercury plate mirror which is broken, as you would expect from a small removable piece of glass nearly 180 years The case has the original label for James Cawston and reads “Cawston dressing case maker 27 Burlington Piccadilly” We have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, it’s a genuine military campaign piece so has patina marks all over, it was certainly a senior military officers piece due to the quality, it would have cost a substantial amount new Dimensions: Height 16.5cm Width 28.5cm Depth 31cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
