About the Item
This cushion-form box of woven reed and lacquered bamboo dates to the early 20th century and is a lovely example of Chinese basketry. The box is woven of reed strips darkened with black and burgundy-red lacquer, forming a design of four auspicious folk symbols and geometric patterns. Clockwise from the top left, the characters convey blessings of longevity (shòu), good fortune (fú), prosperity (lù) and double happiness (shuāngxǐ). Raised by a short bamboo foot and affixed with a brass lock plate and drop handles, the large box is a elegant way to stow household clutter and accent the home with rustic texture.
