Early 20th Century Chinese Double Bat Jewelry Chest

$980

About

Made in the early 20th century in China's Jiangsu province, this jewelry chest was once used by a Qing-dynasty woman to contain her personal treasures in the intimate quarters of a traditional Chinese home. A latch in the shape of two bats tops the jewelry box, a symbol of double happiness and good fortune, while below it, two keyhole locks shaped as ornate charms ornament the drawers. Brass pulls contrast the chest’s birch construction, left unfinished to showcase its natural grain and golden color. The chest’s lid lifts to reveal a framed mirror. Additional dimensions: Height with mirror extended: 17.75" Drawers: 8.5" W x 12" D x 2.5" H.
