About the Item

A large French dore bronze mounted banded agate box with velvet interior lined shelves, dating to the late 19th century. The exterior is constructed from rectangular banded agate panels in hues of black and brown, exhibiting natural white banding patterns typical of the material sourced for decorative stonework during this period. Each agate panel is set into a gilt bronze frame with fine tooling along the edges. The mounting is composed of gilded bronze, precisely cut to accommodate the contours of the agate slabs, forming a box of rectangular form with a flat hinged lid. The box is unsigned but consistent in technique and construction with French objets de luxe of the Belle Époque era. The structure is composed of ten polished agate panels forming the top, two sets of three panels forming the front and back sides, sides and base, all enclosed in a chased gilt bronze framework. Each corner of the box is reinforced with vertically ribbed bronze uprights terminating in ball-form feet, also composed of banded agate. The lid lifts on a back-mounted hinge and reveals a velvet-lined interior, divided into two stacked compartments. The removable upper tray contains two main sections and a fitted edge to rest securely within the box. Beneath it lies a lower section with multiple divided compartments designed for storing rings and other small personal items. The interior is fully lined in red velvet with insert padding and recessed cutouts tailored to the compartments.
