Late 19th Century French Marquetry Jewelry/Dresser Box, Maison Vervelle

About the Item

A beautifully detailed French, brass mounted, marquetry and inlaid burl, fruitwood, and kingwood dresser box. The top is domed and the interior lined with original velvet. Bass banding on the exterior and brass lock plate marked Maison Vervelle. Inlaid with images of birds and gardens on all four sides and top, each one unique. Maison Vervelle, late 19th century. The Maison Vervelle was founded in 1804 by Jean Francois Vervelle, and later taken over by his son, Alexandre Louis Vervelle. (1800-1856.) The company participated in the Universal exhibitions of 1827 and 1844, as well as the Paris exhibition of 1855. It also published the " Bulletin du Magasin des Nouveautés" in 1830. The company was taken over by Henry Audot in 1856, becoming Maison Vervelle Audot, and became known for the high quality of its manufacturing of small, luxury pieces of furniture and accessories. Some very minor losses; no key.
