Antique Neoclassical Duplex English Brass Corinthian Banquet Oil Lamp GWTW
About the Item
An exquisite antique English brass Duplex oil lamp, featuring a tall base in the shape of a Corinthian column festooned with cherub / satyr faces and leaurel wreaths / swag. The milk glass shade features a scalloped upper edge and tranferware brown rose accented with hand painted gilding. Lamp contains a double wick. Hole in side of base indicates the beginning of conversion to electric.
One of the most successful paraffin lamps was the Duplex burner introduced in 1865 which had two wicks side by side and, like the Argand lamp, a clear glass chimney with air drawn from below. Most lamps also had a larger shade around the chimney often of opaque glass to diffuse the light. The shades or diffusers provided an opportunity for decoration, and a variety of shapes, colours and patterns were used.
