About the Item

An Eastern Galician or Ukraine dually made for use as a Hanukkah Lamp or on Shabbat as two candlestick holders with a special sand casting method. Beautifully cast back plate features two kneeling deer their heads turned gracefully backward, their hooves touching a flourishing acanthus plant. Surmounted above them on each side two peacocks nest among the cast foliage with a tail crown applied to its crest. The lower main body features two circular linked balustrades one attached to the backplate and a detachable one in front as a guard for the Hanukkah lamps. Eight rectangular tapering oil pans all made in one thick cast piece are affixed to the back and sides of the lower body. Each side panel is entirely cast with a large roaring rampant lion their heads fiercely turned toward each of the Shabbat candlestick holders. Both lion's tails curve upward and outward to hold the bobeche for the jug-shaped candle holders used for Shabbat. Candle lamp rests on four curved animalistic paw feet which are a part of each lower side panel.

Cast brass Hanukkah Lamp, Galicia, 18th century. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring dense scrollwork. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...
