About the Item
A rare and highly decorative pair of French torchères in turned and carved oak wood, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880. Rooted in the tradition of French folk art, these sculptural pieces showcase a richly tactile surface with deep ribbed carvings and a warm, hand-finished patina. The solid oak, chosen for its strength and texture, has been expertly turned and worked to create a bold architectural presence.
Their robust, barrel-like form is punctuated with neoclassical brass lion heads and draped motifs adorned with small metal studs, evoking the ornamental language of the Napoleonic Empire. Each torchère features a hand-hammered copper band running along its equator, flanked by polished silver-toned spheres that add a sense of symmetry and balance.
The base is octagonal and accented with vertical carved lines, copper inlays, and applied brass rosettes—subtle but powerful nods to 19th-century artisan traditions. The interior still retains its original metal tubes, indicating their likely use as torch holders, though they could also be adapted for modern lighting if desired. A label on the underside reads “Peraud,” which may refer to a regional workshop or craftsman.
Striking, theatrical, and full of character, this pair is a beautiful testament to the creativity and technical skill found in French rural decorative arts of the period.
