18th Century Venetian Baroque Polychrome Carved Altar Candlestick

About the Item

A Baroque period hand carved wooden church altar stick from the second half of the 18th century, possibly the very early 19th century, likely Veneto region of northeastern Italy origin. In beautiful antique condition, with warm, rustic patina, faded, naturally distressed chippy paint finish with heavy losses to surface and paint. Repainted over the centuries, giving it a unique, one of a kind muted polychrome appearance with an old world Tuscan vibe. Features central carved turned standard surmounted by single one-light candle holder cup pricket, circular wax guard, rising on a tripartite base with an elegantly simple motif of scroll-work. The charming religious antique, circa 1780, lived a full life on a church altar in Italy and is believed to have been imported into the states by the previous owner. To preserve the integrity of the ancient wood it has not been wired as a lamp and is now ready for its next life in a beautiful home. Wonderful as a centerpiece on a large dining table, decor on a console, desk or floor, or as a stunning shabby chic accent on a fireplace mantle. Candle light from these old candlesticks bring a seductive and romantic atmosphere of comfortable warmth to any room and the original heavily worn, distress aged appearance of the piece adds character and historic depth to all contemporary furnishings. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of the late Huey Keeney (1951-2018) of Tyler, Texas. A well known local attorney and avid antique collector. *Photos taken in both bright direct light and low indirect light to best represent the colors. Condition: Fair Beautiful patina. Distressing, chippy paint finish. Rustic and old. Overall in good condition for its centuries of age and use with heavy losses to wood surface and paint finish (please see all photos). A scarce Baroque Period Spanish altarpiece retablo / reredo, by (attributed) Luis Salvador Carmona (1708-1767), depicting thorn crowned Christ crucified / Cristo crucificado hand carved, polychromed wood with forged iron nails, mounted on later plaque. This rare antique religious work / object of art, circa 1750, most likely commissioned by the Catholic Church of Spain, destined to be prominently displayed as an altarpiece / retablo or as part of a much larger reredo, directly behind the main altar at a Spanish or Continental European Catholic Church (French, Italian, Iberian, Portuguese) The Crucified Christ, displayed mounted on a later faded red fabric upholstered shaped backboard plaque with textured gilt border. The exceptional hand sculpted, carved, gessoed, polychrome painted figure depicting bloodied Jesus, with crown of thorns atop his head, only wearing a undulating shaped cloth around his loin, arms extended and feet crossed, spear head form iron nails through both. The verso covered in an old paper printed backing with metal hook hardware at top for wall hanging.
