About the Item

Henri Picard (active c. 1840-1890) & Victor Paillard Foundry — Pair of Silver-Plated Bronze Serpentine Candlesticks, French Second Empire, ca. 1860 Finely cast and silver-plated bronze candlesticks, each modeled as a sinuous snake coiling up a textured branch to seize a fleeing rodent, the drama culminating beneath a leaf-wrapped bobèche that holds the candle. The naturalistic stem rises from a rocaille-inspired tripod base of overlapping acanthus leaves terminating in cloven-hoof feet. Underside of each foot bears the incised “V P” monogram and closed-crown stamp of Victor Paillard’s Paris foundry, celebrated for its collaborations with master bronzier Henri Picard during the reign of Napoleon III. Lustrous plates remain intact with gentle, even toning; minutiae of casting—scales, fur, and veining—are crisp throughout. Dimensions (each): 13 ½ in. H × 9 in. W × 6 in. D (approx. 34.5 × 23 × 15 cm). A rare, theatrically inventive pair marrying Picard’s imaginative design with Paillard’s superb craftsmanship.
